VIRGO (Aug 24 – Sep 23)

This month, you must tune in to the comfortable, motherly, nurturing and stable aspects of your nature, Virgo, and balance them with the strong protective energy that is also part of you. This will help you to make a decision that has had you oscillating between your heart and your head.

LIBRA (Sep 24 – Oct 23)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 – Dec 21)

You will be a busy bee this month, Pisces, buzzing from person to person and project to project.  Remember to hold your heart open at all times while calling upon your angels and guides to keep it safe. You will be drawn to geometrical shapes and will find yourself fascinated by their energy.

The Purpose of Anger

in Features

I have been sojourning into the murky, painful world of anger recently.  Healthy anger and unhealthy anger.

We all have anger issues. It is part of the human condition and in its healthy form it is an essential tool for survival. But it is perceived in society as dirty, something to be ashamed of and that needs to be hidden from polite society.

There is a whole lot of anger in the world at the moment… generated by the fear that surrounds us. Fear of change, fear of the unknown and the fear of knowing that we can no longer trust those who are supposed to be taking care of us.

I have become aware of having anger directed at me, quite cruelly, from people who I love and who love me and this is tricky. This, not least of all, in relation to my recent journey with my brother who died in March. Not everyone can deal with such a situation, the loss and pain are too great and even those of us who have the resources to do so will struggle and either express anger or invite it in from another source to do it for us. I am sure many of you can relate to this. What we cannot see or express in ourselves we will unconsciously find expression of in someone else… it is called projection or reflection.

So, I have been reflecting. And this has led me to understanding the Fear… Anger…Sadness cycle and how it comes full circle.

What comes first? I think anger. Anger at not being held by the primary caregiver. Not being safe to express Anger. Or even being encouraged to express anger and then being beaten down for doing so.

Then comes Fear. Fear of expressing (healing) Anger. There are consequences – which means that there are consequences to being me.

And then the Sadness of being dismissed which can start off as an emotional refuge but recycles back to Anger.

Fear harnesses the ‘ways’ that Anger was suppressed. These become the tools of the ego, diligently employed to keep (me) ‘safe’.

These tools, specific to the individual, are familiar, known and therefore perfect for keeping ‘me’ suppressed. Bound in Fear for daring to be who I am. The danger of daring to be authentic.

Eventually, however, it is most likely that rebellion will take place within and seek to find a way to express itself. This often happens by way of reinforcing the suppression. The Fear becomes twofold …. On the one hand is the fight to express one’s authenticity (I AM real, I DO exist) and on the other hand, to reinforce exactly the opposite in order to ‘stay safe’.

Fear can become paralysis or it can become rage. Anger will resurface, it can’t not, but it will resurface in one of these two ways. Rage or Paralysis. Play dead or become a killer.

Rage is an unhealthy and potentially dangerous form of Anger. It is uncontrolled Anger. The original Anger is healthy, Rage is not.

Rage is all encompassing in its moment. It is an out-of-control monster which can, and does, rule peoples’ lives and the lives of their families, spouses, and loved ones. And no one knows when it is going to dive in, or what it will react to.

Rage does not represent anyone’s authenticity because there is nothing authentic about Rage. The underlying Anger is deeply and truly authentic but by the time it has arrived at Rage, so much damage has been done that it is simply destructive, throwing the beautiful, perfect baby out with the bathwater.

Rage does indeed have a purpose, but then so does breaking things, smashing things, punching, even murder. Rage is not an emotion, it is an action .. a re-action to suppressed anger. It has a genuine, powerful origin but it is a profoundly and dangerously unhealthy reaction which grows into an addictive habit. It is a Soul way of reclaiming its birthright, of reclaiming its power but it is a lost way of doing so. A lost and damaging way of doing so. And, as with all addictions, the outcome of each engagement is shame and self-loathing. And then the endless rhetoric of self-justification under the guidance of the victim within, produced and directed by the ego – the Inner Narcissist.

Most of us have heard the term ‘rageaholic’. So, I ask, what is the difference between a rageaholic and an alcoholic? Neither of these behaviours (that is they are) are of the person. Of the glorious, amazing being behind them. They are human reactions to being dismissed, to not being acknowledged, to being told that you do not count, you do not matter, that you are not special, that you are not good enough. The ‘you’ in your ‘youness’ has been dismissed.

Behaviour management has its place in recovery. It can be used to do just that, manage behaviour, but the reality is that it is a repressive technique. It not only goes no way towards healing the underlying damage, neither does it respect the individual, never mind the soul. In fact, behaviour management serves to ‘normalise’ the individual into what society can tolerate while sweeping authenticity under the proverbial carpet. We can employ different behaviour management modalities healthily and effectively, but only when we understand that they are ‘savlon’ therapies, valuable to keep the underlying issue from suppurating, while we undertake repairing the root cause and leaving it where it belongs – either vapourised or in the past.

Meanwhile, remember that you are enough… you are a divine being on a remarkable journey.

The Souls Journey

in Features

What point, what purpose would there be in navigating our way through this life if not for a greater good, whatever that may be?

I have been asking myself this question of late and the answer that speaks most powerfully to me comes from Michael Mirdad and A Course In Miracles.  He explains that we are all here due to original separation (also known as original sin) and our purpose is to heal and return to Paradise from whence we came. Our egos got too big for Paradise and decided that we could go it alone, that we no longer needed God or love and created the separation. It is the soul’s journey to heal the damage we have inflicted upon ourselves since then and evolve our way back home.

The only way we can make our way back home is by healing and as we are all one, it is essential that we share our learnings and our healing with others in order that we all eventually, sooner or later, make the journey safely back home.

We are spiritual beings having a physical experience in a human body. Our souls have much healing to do and, it is believed, that we choose different bodies and different lessons throughout successive lifetimes as we move through the journey.  Therefore, there will be messengers, teachers and students who we join with for periods of time for the purposes of healing and evolving.  (And for fun too!)   Sometimes, we learn our lessons quickly, other times they need to be repeated again and again until the light gets through and we swiftly move onto the next one.

It is all about Love. Unconditional, non-judgemental love, which, as humans, we constantly confuse with romantic love.   and we love to think about soul mates. or twin flames.  These are often wonderful and delicious experiences but usually end in pain.  Why?  Because we are looking to others to fix us.  Society is relentless in teaching us that there is someone out there specially for us.  That you have this magical ‘other’ who will complete you and you’ll live happily ever after. It may happen occasionally, but the reality is that significant others are usually of the soul mate variety who come to do some healing with us and that isn’t always pretty!

After the initial ‘falling in love’ phase we begin to shine a light into those cracks and crevices within that we hide from ourselves. Those hidden places where we stuff old wounds. Pain follows and denial and fighting as the ego tries frantically to hold on while the soul is crying out to heal.

Attraction is important in order to create the closeness that is needed for the lessons to be delivered. Souls connect and fall in love because they know that a great healing is about to take place (or is about to be given the opportunity to). On a soul level, we fall in love with the healing and our soul wants to heal, even though it may take us to hell and back to do so.  It doesn’t work without the pain because we will do anything to avoid pain, even hide our hearts in the sand in denial, pretending that it isn’t happening or that we can ‘fix’ it. Wrong! The only thing we can ‘fix’ is the pain held deep within and to do that we need to face it, dig it out and clean it up.

We think we are in love with the person (it’s possible),  but it is really the prospect of the healing that we get excited about. We can go beyond the pain and the hurt and continue to love the person because we are all just doing our best to survive and protect ourselves in a living hell.  To move beyond the pain that we inflict, and that we have inflicted upon us, and to hold the love for the real person, the energy of the higher self is something that has to be arrived at somewhere, in some life, so why not now, in this one? This can happen, even if the relationship, as we humanly desire it, is not tenable. eg “I do not love your behaviour, and I will not tolerate abuse, but I love you, the inner you, the real you, truly and deeply”. This can also be done from a distance.

It is important not to confuse a teacher with a messenger.  Once we realise that something more than romantic love is afoot, it is easy to think the ‘teacher’ has arrived when it is in fact a ‘messenger’. Often times the messenger has no idea they are delivering a lesson. It is highly likely that they are just a person damaged or in pain. We are attracted to each other, not realising that it is our pain recognising a kindred spirit’s pain and falling in love with it.  If you are sufficiently evolved, you will eventually recognise this but don’t be fooled into thinking that your loved one will understand the dynamics and choose to heal along with you. It can happen but not often! More likely, you will need to go and find a teacher in the form of an emotional/spiritual therapist.

We can choose to hold on to or heal from our pain. The deep ache of losing a relationship is due to not having learned the soul’s lesson and knowing that you will have to repeat until you do. You may still have the pain of loss but the euphoria of the healing far surpasses it and affects every aspect of life. It is akin to recovering from a long, debilitating illness.

Letting Go

in Features

You are Enough

I found myself wandering into the terrain of the Divine Feminine this morning. H’mmm – interesting I thought. Morning study is always best for me.

This pull towards really understanding the Divine Man/Woman connection and how I sabotage or honour ‘my’ Divine Feminine energy with ‘his’ Divine Masculine.

I ask my self – “In what ways do I feed and nurture this sacred connection/union on a healthy level?” And how does this link in with ‘You are Enough’?

And I realised that it is about feeling that you are ‘enough’ as you are and it is safe to let go of the old stuff of survival and to allow the emergence of the new … which is really the old, the hidden stuff, the silenced Feminine or Masculine.

The survival strategies, which served you so very well, are no longer appropriate. Indeed, they are the opposite – they are now destructive. They have become structures for self-sabotage. In this rapidly changing world that we live, our survival instincts have been nudging their way back into our daily lives in ways that we couldn’t have imagined a few short years ago.  And, while we strive to move forward in life, the reality is that we fall back into old patterns which served us well, at one time, and which we subconsciously dive back into for cover when we feel threatened or fearful. And there is much of that around!

As a young single mum of two boys, I can see now that the drive of the Feminine Energy in me to nurture and care for my sons is what drove the Masculine Energy in me to be the provider, caretaker, protector.  And so, I became both.  Thank goodness for that.  We all have masculine and feminine energy and the key is to recognise it and have it in balance. We need both. However, the challenge is to find the balance and to maintain it in a healthy way. Our planet, Mother earth, is way out of alignment at the moment and is tilting and weaving in her attempts to get back in balance. Mother earth needs us to develop the feminine energy of caretaking and nurturing in order for the human race to continue living an existence that is worth living. We have had enough war and competition, enough misdirected value placed on materialism and ‘things’.  Too much doing not enough being.

In order to become the Divine Male/Female that you truly are, that is your real strength, you must let go of the old strategies. They are obsolete, they are holding you back.

We hold on to old habits and beliefs like we hold onto trauma. Just in case it happens again, I can be prepared. Thus, oftentimes, ensuring that it will indeed happen again and so I can prove, over and over, that I can survive it. That the mechanisms are still in place and thus I am strong. Oh, so wrong!

This is not, in any way, to minimalise the necessity and importance of the structures which have served us so well. It is to elucidate the importance of recognising that their time is gone and we must let go of them.  Letting go is scary but necessary if we are to evolve and live our best life.

How is it possible, you might ask, to actually let go of such deeply embedded habits. Surely, they have become intrinsic to who we really are. Or we think they are because they are so familiar and we feel dependent on them. We identify who we are through these embedded habits and would be at a loss as to how to navigate a single day without them. This is similar to the ties we have with narcissistic family members. Or toxic friends. Or the daily job which draws your energy and devoids you of your creativity but is ‘safe’ and, more or less, pays the bills.

Letting go isn’t easy and can only happen successfully when you feel that ‘you are enough’ in yourself to recognise that you deserve better so you can let go and move on. The way to feel that ‘you are enough’ is to let go of the emotional blocks that were put in place when you were a little impressionable child and then reinforced by yourself and others as you grew and developed. Bequeathed to you by overprotective parents and carers who wanted to keep you safe from risk. Risk taking is not seen as being a safe thing to do and so loving protection can (and often does) backfire.  Of course, much damage is also bequeathed by parents who did not have the tools, or were too damaged themselves, to parent in a healthy, loving way, perhaps seeking to have their own needs met at the expense of their child’s.

To let go of limiting beliefs and know that ‘you are enough’ is a hard, if satisfying, road. It takes the desire and willingness to undertake deep inner work and to look at very uncomfortable things which you experienced, the repercussions of which shaped you and have been guiding you through life for so long, long after they were done.  It is also important to be aware that knowing that you are enough will require lifelong maintenance much in the same way as other healthy daily habits for life. Habits like having a daily shower – and they can be done at the same time!

Honour and accept the part of you that has held these beliefs so dearly for so long.  It was only trying to keep you safe.  Let it go with gratitude and love and remember –

“You are enough”.

Letting Go

in Features

To let go is to release, to surrender, to trust the process..

My younger brother died last week. He was 8 years younger than me so I knew him before he was even born and I remember the day like it was yesterday even though it was over 60 years ago. I remember it as possibly the most exciting day of my life and I was able to tell him that in those last days when he was clearly slipping away. He had had a stroke …. An incredibly young and fit man who was healthy and strong and devoted to nature.

He was making an amazing recovery from the stroke and, as he did not have a wife or children, I became his next of kin and he was discharged to live with me to continue his rehabilitation. We had a wonderful two weeks and then he suddenly had a second stroke. This time a ruptured aneurysm, and it was massive. He was given two hours to live. He was blue lighted to the nearest high-tech ICU and defied all odds by regaining consciousness and coming through several procedures. We were warned that his physical strength along with a phenomenal spirit may well keep him alive but that the damage to his brain would most likely leave him severely impaired both physically and intellectually.

Although he was wired up to more tubes than should have been possible, he was never on actual ‘life support’ so there was never an opportunity to make the life/death decision for him and so he kept on coming through and proving that his mental function was much greater than could have been anticipated. And, while greatly impaired, it was clear that with time and intensive rehab, his physical function was also very promising. One by one the tubes were removed and the return to health continued, albeit with the highs and lows of a roller coaster. He was not for letting go and as his communication improved so too did his chances and he was given a place in a highly sought after brain rehab unit. This had taken three months but finally we got there… only for him to get a brain infection and be swiftly moved back to acute neurology. The following three weeks were a blur of antibiotics and Donald coarsing his way through infection after infection. He pulled through again and was on his way back into rehab but it was not to be. Another infection, more brutal than the last, got hold of him again and his strong, lithe little body just could not sustain this one. It was decided to put him onto palliative care and let him go.

This last stage came about so suddenly and was brutal. He knew what was happening (I told him gently and carefully – he had to know) and he was scared. I was not alone in this mission, I had the unconditional support and strength of my dear and trusted friend, Martin, who held me energetically, physically and emotionally so I could do the same for Donald. We took turns at sleeping through the night and holding him, reassuring him and encouraging him to let go. It was a heartbreaking gift and a sacred experience. On the final morning he had relaxed and was in a peaceful and deep sleep. It was beautiful. But the most beautiful part was when he suddenly opened his eyes, looked directly at me. (his eyes hadn’t opened for four days), turned and looked directly at Martin, then looked up to a spot on the ceiling, staring wide eyed for 10-15 seconds. I remember jumping out of my chair and saying ,excitedly, “who has come for you Donald?” He closed his eyes, put his head back on the pillow and was gone. He had finally let go. And he was at peace.

I am relating this story as it is still raw and real and the message is so profound that I believe it merits sharing. We are all going to die and, regardless of how accepting we are of this fact, or what our beliefs are, death is unknown and it is the biggest, and most important letting go we will ever do. And we have no choice.

There are many letting go’s throughout our lifetimes and they all carry pain and freedom. We hold onto the familiar, even when it no longer serves us, because it is known. We hold on to jobs, relationships, houses, friendships…. The list is endless. Of course, it is important to work through difficulties and challenges before moving on or else we just reel them in again until the lesson is learned. Sometimes letting go can be running away which is not going to work either. So, we must be careful to not run away prematurely and neither to hold on to what has already gone.

Having helped my baby brother with his biggest letting go, I am acutely aware of taking on board the reassurance and encouragement that Martin and I were able to give him, that it was safe for him to let go. To witness the childlike beauty with which he was able to trust us and to let go so gracefully is something I feel I have been trusted with, allowed to hold and must continue to hold and share for reasons that will surely become clear as the future unfolds. Trust the process, it is safe to let go and you are enough.

Year of the Rabbit

in Features

According to Chinese Astrology, each year corresponds to one of twelve animals  (Rat. Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig) and this cycle repeats every twelve years. The Chinese base their New Year celebration on the lunar calendar instead of the solar one that is used in the west. Therefore, people who follow the solar calendar always celebrate New Year on January 1st. But the Chinese New Year depends on the moon. Usually it is celebrated in February, but the exact date does vary from year to year depending on the phases of the moon’s cycle. This year it falls on January 22nd. The most recent Rabbit Years are 1939 1951 1963 1975 1987 1999 2011 2023 and so this year, of 2023, is The Year of the Rabbit. The Water Rabbit.

The sign of Rabbit, in Chinese culture, is a symbol of wisdom, of longevity, peace, and prosperity. 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope. And we can all do with plenty of that!

Rabbits are considered to be gentle, quiet, elegant, and alert as well as quick, skillful, kind, and patient.  They tend to be responsible, sometimes reluctant to reveal their minds to others and having a tendency to escape reality, but always faithful to those around them.

Male Rabbits are inclined to treat people politely, with a simplicity that makes people feel valued and respected. They are not easily discouraged but instead remain persistent in their endeavors to find solutions to life’s problems.. This means they eventually achieve success.

Female Rabbits are personified as having a pretty and demure appearance, whilst also having a pure heart.

The Rabbit is considered to make the best love partners with Goat, Dog, or Pig and worst with: Rat or Rooster

So what does 2023 hold for us?

I think it is fair to say that 2022 was more than a little hectic. However, the next 12 months could offer opportunities for relaxation, quietness and contemplation.

As the Year of the Tiger comes to an end on Jan. 21 and the Year of the Rabbit begins, we can expect rather an abrupt change of pace as we say goodbye to the roaring tiger and hello to the milder rabbit.

The rabbit is historically known as the gentlest and most tender of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, the traditional classification scheme based on the lunar calendar that assigns an animal and its attributes to each year.

Rabbit energy is also good for inner growth, personal and spiritual development and reaching a sense of peace with your place in the grand scheme of things in the Universe. This could involve undertaking workshops and webinars, reading, studying and taking part in support groups.

This is naturally a perfect year for Rabbit people to engage on a deeper journey of personal and spiritual development. This is always the case for the animal celebrating its own Chinese Year

As 2023 is the year of water Rabbit, this suggests a year of calm after the storm. A time of recalibration and self-reflection, of developing heart centred awareness. Chinese zodiac animal signs are grouped in six pairs according to the balance between yin and yang. Each of these groupings is associated with one of six destiny aspects known as Houses. These Houses influence the overall characteristics of the time period in which the animal sign rules.

The second House is the House of expansion, which is associated with the Tiger and the Rabbit (sometimes known as Cat). In the year of the Rabbit there is likely to be expansion through diplomacy and wisdom which will be essential to repair the damage caused by the Tiger’s aggression.

In life and love, the Rabbit is a gentle and caring partner, always looking out for their partner’s wellbeing and happiness.

The animal energy of the year affects everyone. In this Year of the Rabbit, 2023, many people will develop the inner wisdom to take better care of themselves and this will extend to wealth and financial stability as well as to health and happiness. So, take time to focus on your finances, think of investing in stocks, in property or other types of savings’ plans.

Remember also, to be cautious in all your actions.  It is important to retain a trusting and easy-going attitude but equally essential to be vigilant regarding potential frauds or scams.

Because 2023 is the Year of the Water Rabbit, there will be abundance available and coming to those who trust. Water represents the flow of life, our vital force and good health and the very essence of the Rabbit spirit. However, Water Rabbit is tuned in with Mother Earth and so ever aware of potential pitfalls, and vigilant enough to avoid or circumvent them. Water Rabbit always trusts its instincts.

Under the influence of Rabbit energy, we can all take risks with being vulnerable in the confidence that within our vulnerability lies our greatest strength. Thus, we are safe both romantically and financially and success is assured.

Rabbit is also associated with creativity and artistic talents so channel your inner artist this year and explore your creative side. The possibilities are endless whatever you choose to do. Be more flexible, gentler with yourself and surround yourself with others who share a gentle and loving approach to life.

Rabbit energy is beautiful and just what the world needs to rebalance itself right now. So, relax and enjoy the year. Enjoy your journey and the new and exciting things you find along the path. May your path be smooth.
